Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to question particular rulings made by the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
