The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday advert created with AI following receiving considerable public disapproval.

The 45-second spot was created via AI-generated video and was originally uploaded online for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Viewer Criticism and Removal

Soon after it aired, audiences online lambasted the use of AI in the film. A number of labeled it "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This incident is an important lesson as we investigate the appropriate utilization of generative technology," said a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It showed various things that might go awry over the Christmas break, under the slogan "the most terrible time of the year".

The Trend of AI-Generated Ads

Commercials that incorporate AI-created content have emerged as a growing phenomenon among prominent brands, especially for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently launched consecutive AI-created holiday ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Since clips created with generative AI are more likely to degrade the longer they run, most such clips tend to be only a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also raised concerns about the replacement of human roles in the production industry, with some observers noting it could negatively impact work for camera crews.

Response from the Production Company

Following the video's removal, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.

Bridge claimed, the creation required "seven weeks" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then shaped in post-production "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't an experiment," Bridge asserted. "The result was a finished piece."

Mixed Public Reception

While the McDonald's ad was mostly panned, the response for some AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday ad from another major brand reportedly received a 61% "positive feedback" from viewers.

However, other businesses have likewise received criticism for employing the technique in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics described as "lazy" and "disturbing".

The incident underscores the evolving discussion within the marketing and production sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
